Austin Air specially designed and manufactured the Austin Guardian 1, an air purifier which protected citizens from accidental releases of deadly chemicals. The government faced a difficult and deadly task -- destroying lethal biological and chemical weapons near a populated area. They had to incinerate nerve agents like sarin, nearer to a populated area than ever before. In preparation, residents of Calhoun County were provided with an Austin Guardian 1, to protect them from any airborne threats during the destruction of the stockpiles.

A report was commissioned by the United States Army, entitled 'Test Report for the System Effectiveness of Home/Commercial Portable Room Air Cleaners', dated April 27th, 2000. The purpose of the test was to determine how effective commercially available air cleaners are at removing simulated contaminant air vapor from a sealed room. Over 100 unites were studied. The Austin Healthmate HM400 reduced the vapor concentration by 90% in less than 35 minutes. In fact, the Austin HM400 was one of the most effective of the commercial filter units in reducing the vapor.

When the Twin Towers fell, they released tons of airborne contaminants containing asbestos and other harmful and irritant particles. In the months afterwards, some asthma sufferers in Manhattan reported worsening asthma symptoms.
